On the day before the conference a limited number of delegates will have access to the Mabanaft PtL plant on the 8th of November.

The demonstration project is the world’s first power-to-liquid concept on a technical scale to date, supplying so-called e-fuels on the one hand and synthetic hydrocarbons on the other at the same time. These are further processed and marketed as a climate-friendly raw material into chemical-pharmaceutical specialities. The project thus goes beyond pure mobility applications.

eFuel-Today is all about E-Fuels and talks directly to consumers about the positive impact by fossil-free and sustainable fuels in reducing CO2 emissions. The consumer-focused storytelling approach is what makes EFTD stand out. The initiative eFuel-Today was founded by the MEW, its members and partners in January 2021. It quickly became one the world’s leading communication platform for E-Fuels within the German language regions with millions of users reached so far. Frequently published videos and a high roll-out of editorial articles make eFuel-Today a fast moving, one of its kind storytelling machine. By informing customers with reliable, well curated and highly entertaining contents about climate-neutral synthetic and electricity based fuels (E-Fuels), we would like to enable people as well as politicians to take sound decisions to contribute to the climate goals.

The mission of CO2 Value Europe is to promote the development and market deployment of sustainable industrial solutions that convert CO2 into valuable products, in order to contribute to the net reduction of global CO2 emissions and to the diversification of the feedstock base away from fossil oil and gas. Our vision is a future where CCU has become an integral part of a low carbon economy.

Leading the way in efficient CO2 to methanol production

A commercially available, scalable and proven process

As the world continues to decarbonise, methanol is likely to be synthesized from sustainable sources such as CO2 and electrolysis-derived hydrogen in a process known as CO2 hydrogenation. Methanol produced in this way – known as ‘green methanol’ or ‘e-methanol’ – can be used as a low-carbon intensity fuel for marine transport, as a precursor for the production of other fuels (gasoline, DME, kerosene), or as a sustainable feedstock for the production of chemicals such as formaldehyde or olefins.

Building on its long-term expertise and market leadership position in methanol process technology, Johnson Matthey has developed methanol technology and catalysts for these new sustainable feeds, which it offers to the market at scale and with process guarantees.

As an optimised solution, Johnson Matthey’s CO2 to methanol technology ensures high feedstock efficiency, reduced CAPEX and optimised OPEX. It also delivers enhanced catalyst lifetime by incorporating the latest catalyst technology developments.

This presentation will discuss these methanol technology developments and the sustainability benefits they bring.

Key takeaways:

  • As the world continues to decarbonise, green methanol will become increasingly popular and sought after
  • Johnson Matthey has developed a commercially available technology to enable the production of green methanol at scale
  • Johnson Matthey’s green methanol technology is both highly efficient and cost-effective
