Thyssekrupp’s Carbon2Chem Pilot Plant

Duisburg, Germany – Tuesday 8th October 2019

During the afternoon of Tuesday 8th October, prior to the conference, a limited number of attendees will receive the unique opportunity to visit Thyssenkrupp’s Carbon2Chem pilot plant.

The Carbon2Chem® technical center is built adjacent to the thyssenkrupp Steel Europe site in Duisburg on an area of 3.700 m2. The ground-breaking ceremony took place on 2nd November 2016. After 16 months, the demonstration plants were put into operation in March 2018. In addition to a hall for the water electrolysis, a pipeline bridge and a gas purification plant, a laboratory building of 520 m2 as well as a building for a workshop, a control room and social rooms were built. The official opening ceremony took place on 20th September 2018 with the premier of the methanol production form cleaned steel mill gases. The aim of the Carbon2Chem® project is to use sectoral coupling to convert the top gases produced in the steel production into chemical products such as fertilizers, polymers and synthetic fuels.

There is no extra charge to attend the site visit, but spaces are limited and allocated on a first come first served basis. Please notify your interest for the site visit when booking for the conference.

Electrochaea has developed a commercially viable and disruptive solution for utility-scale energy storage, grid balancing, and carbon reuse.
Our proprietary process converts low-cost and stranded electricity and carbon dioxide into pipeline-grade renewable gas for direct injection into the existing natural gas grid, a conversion process known as “power-to-gas”. The core of our power-to-gas system is a selectively evolved microorganism – a methanogenic archaea – that excels through unprecedented catalytic ability and industrial robustness. The technical advantages of this biocatalyst enable our patented BioCat methanation technology to operate at lower capital and operating costs and with greater flexibility than conventional thermochemical methanation processes. Electrochaea GmbH is a dynamic early stage company with headquarters, engineering and development teams in Munich, Germany, and a commercial scale demonstration facility in our Danish subsidiary, as well as in Solothurn, Switzerland, and Colorado, US. Plants of more than one gigawatt of capacity are targeted by 2025. 20 empolyees work for Electrochaea. CEO is Mich Hein. Website: www.electrochaea.com

Phytonix Corporation is an industrial biotechnology company producing sustainable, carbon-negative chemicals directly from carbon dioxide. The company is headquartered in North Carolina, USA, with a corporate office in Vancouver, Canada, plus development laboratories and partners in Sweden, Germany, the United States, Nova Scotia and British Columbia, Canada, and The Netherlands. Phytonix Canada Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Phytonix Corporation.

Our globally patented process employs cyanobacteria, which are the same organisms responsible for creating a breathable atmosphere on Earth and that contributed greatly to the genesis of our miraculous blue planet. Phytonix’s objective is to be the global leader in bio-safe, direct solar chemical production utilizing carbon dioxide emissions as the sole feedstock for the cyanobacteria along with energy from the Sun. Phytonix and its partners utilize a collaborative and distributed business model with a capital-light strategy, based upon circular economy principles, to produce a variety of renewable chemicals from carbon dioxide, sunlight, and water via patented photobiological and synthetic biology-based technology.

The company will initially produce biobutanol, biopentanol and biooctonol, which are valuable industrial chemicals and drop-in gasoline and diesel fuel replacements. The first product in our pipeline, 1-butanol, can be used as an intermediate for a broad array of bio-based industrial chemicals and well as having many end user applications, Phytonix’s n-butanol production process is a replacement for the fossil-based, carbon-intensive process currently used by the world’s largest chemical companies. Our process eliminates one tonne of carbon dioxide via bio-conversion for every 138 gallons of biobutanol produced.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT) is one of the biggest Fraunhofer institutes in Germany. Actually about 500 persons are working in the core competences of chemical processes, energetic systems, explosives technology, new drive systems, plastic technology and sandwich materials.

Since many years the Fraunhofer ICT is concerned in the field of sustainability and renewable resources.

In the department of Environmental Engineering one focus lays on the development of environmental friendly chemical processes. Sustainable pulping of different types of biomass, the direct use of biomass components, e.g. cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, as well as their transformation to fine or bulk chemicals as a possible substitute of fossil based chemicals are investigated.

Complementary great experience in separation and purification technologies, e.g. in the field of distillation and extraction processes exists. One flag ship is the extraction with supercritical CO2. Thereby it was already possible to debinder several materials successfully or to extract value chemicals from biomass. Currently methods for precious metal recycling from spent catalysts are developed as well as methods for the extraction of toxic materials from plastic before recycling.

As the department of Environmental Engineering has great competences in catalysis and reaction technology, in the last years, also the usage of CO2 comes to a focus. Amongst others, the ICT is working in the field of synthetic green fuels for aviation and long-distance traffic.
