Port of Frederikshavn is among the ten largest in Denmark and includes a traffic harbour, a ferry harbour and a versatile service industry. It is a modern, centrally located, commercial port with good facilities and a service set-up, which ensures fast and efficient handling of ships and cargo.

The Port of Frederikshavn puts you at the centre of North European shipping. Logistically speaking, the Port of Frederikshavn is centrally located between the North Sea and the Baltic States. The port is right on the world’s third most trafficked corridor (Route T), through which 100,000 ships pass each year.

The expansion of the port (14 m water depth – 500,000 m2 hinterland – 30,000 m2 quay area – 1,000 m quay) means increased and new opportunities within offshore, oil, gas and wind, LNG and environmentally friendly scrapping and recycling of ships and drilling rigs.

MARS Ltd was established in 1971 to perform barge, boat, and ship demolition and recycling in the U.S. market. In 2017 a 10-year lease agreement was executed with the Port of Frederikshavn to operate a state of the art, purpose-built ship and offshore platform recycling facility. Our vision is to set new European standards for green onshore decommissioning, scrapping, recycling and waste management in the most modern, purposefully constructed recycling facility in Europe. Due to the high safety and environmental standards MARS A/S has recently been added to the European List of approved ship recycling facilities. Through client understanding, adherence to international conventions and decades of experience, we provide 1st class service through the entire process cycle. To date MARS Ltd has performed 800+ material barge off-loads, set-ups, clean-offs and off-charters. Recycled over 1,400,000 tons of offshore oil & gas infrastructure. Processed 10,000+ barges and 100+ ships of various sizes.

JRD Industries is the offshoot of one of the oldest ship recycling groups in India who has been in this unique business for more than four decades.

Sanjiv Agarwal (Managing Partner) and his experienced team of professionals and trained full-time workers have created a truly world-class Indian ship recycling facility with unique expertise in carrying out ship recycling operations fully focused on HSEQ.

The company counts among their clients, some of the most discerning ship owners in the world and has completely matched their high standards for sustainable ship recycling. Awarded with the Statement of Compliance for HKC by Class NK and the Certificate of Compliance to EUSRR also from ClassNK, the yard has applied to the EU Commission for inclusion in the European List of Ship Recycling Yards and is awaiting the verification visit.

The company recently successfully recycled HMNZS Endeavour for the Royal New Zealand Navy, who having  found JRD “with an obvious desire and willingness to not only meet all required standards but significantly exceed them” were completely satisfied with the manner in which the project was handled.

JRD firmly believes that Indian Ship Recycling inherently is characterised by the substantial reuse of recycled materials from the ship and therefore has by far the lowest possible carbon footprint in recycling a vessel. This advantage coupled with high HSEQ Standards make JRD amongst the most sustainable ship recycling operations anywhere in the globe today.

Sea Sentinels profile

Additional Services:

Sea2Cradle is built around a multinational team of highly skilled and experienced professionals that can handle ships in all shapes and sizes. Our mission is to set new standards for the ship recycling industry, and to help as many ship owners as possible to hassle-free recycle their ship, rig, platform or FPSO responsibly.

With increasing demand from interested ship owners in green recycling, many of whom with highly respected names in the shipping industry, the team handled dozens of projects over the last years, while setting new standards for Health, Safety and Environmental performance: demolition yards with an accident-free working environment, proper disposal of hazardous materials without exposure to the workers, recycling over 95% of all material with the aim of 100%. These are just some examples of the standards Sea2Cradle upholds in every project.

All the recycling yards we work with combine a safe working environment with high environmental performance. Our aim is zero pollution, zero accidents and zero incidents.

Aside from raising the bar from an operational perspective, we are actively participating in the legislational process and promoting green ship recycling options for the shipping industry.

The team behind Sea2Cradle has for many years worked towards establishing a level playing field for Green Ship Recycling and have actively participated in IMO’s work leading to the Ship Recycling Convention. Furthermore, we remain involved in future work of the European Commission DG Environment, ILO, IMO, Basel Convention and local governments such as China, the United Kingdom and The Netherlands.

International Ship Recycling Association (ISRA)
The main objective of IRSA is promoting environmentally sound and safe recycling of ships.
ISRA is an association representing the strongest responsible yards of the globe. Accomplishing the ISRA high level demands for sustainable ship recycling, means that the ISRA-yards have made huge investments. Substandard yards do not invest in safe and sound recycling. Responsible recycling yards have to compete with these substandard yards. To eliminate this unfair competition, a level playing field is required as an essential, necessary component for achieving the main objective of ISRA: promoting sound and safe recycling of ships.

Ship recycling is an essential part in the circular economy
Since ship recycling is a crucial link in the chain of the whole shipping industry, ship owners and their financial institutions are thus an integral part in the chain of responsible and sustainable shipping. A cradle to grave philosophy for (financing) their assets supports ISRA’s worldwide goals. These organizations can contribute substantially to green recycling.
Being an (associate) member of ISRA, organizations show and commit themselves to the ISRA objectives.
ISRA has excellent relationships with various international (e.g. IMO/EC/EP) and national organizations and uses these channels to achieve objectives of their members.
