Thomas Wins His First WGC Title at Firestone

Congratulations to World Golf Championship winner Justin Thomas! This is Thomas’ first WGC win, and on Sunday’s final round at Firestone no one managed to get within two shots of him, despite a somewhat shaky start in the first round. Ultimately, he finished 15-under, staying just far enough ahead of the pack on Sunday to comfortably sink a birdie at 13, followed by five straight pars. It was an emotional win for Thomas, whose parents and grandparents were on hand to witness him earning his newest title.

Yesterday’s win was Thomas’s third Tour victory this season, tying him with current FedEx Leader Dustin Johnson and fourth place Bubba Watson for victories this season. It also helped secure his spot on the Ryder Cup Team, so he’ll be heading to Paris to support the American team’s effort to retain the trophy. Thomas moves on to the PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis this week, where he’ll attempt to defend his title and lock in another Major victory.

Next year the WGC Bridgestone Invitational moves on from Firestone after hosting all but one edition since 1999. In 2019 the PGA has announced it will be known as the WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational as it moves to Memphis, Tennessee. It will be contested at TPC Southwind and continues a legacy of Memphis being a host city for a PGA Tour Event for over 60 years.
