Which raw materials for HVO – Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils ?

HVO production capacity is rapidly increasing in the context of GHG reduction schemes.  This is significantly growing the demand for renewable oils. Which oils will be suitable and available?  Will the needed hydrogen be from renewable source?

Christian Pinon, bio-engineer from UCLouvain University has been working for more than 30 years in oleochemicals at PetroFina, Oleon and Mosselman. Since 2019 he organizes Oleochemical training courses.

Join up to 500 targeted delegates online for two hours – including Biodiesel producers, HVO/HEFA producers, Downstream oil companies/HVO producers Researchers, Process technology providers, Catalyst companies, Fuel Traders/Brokers, Consultants, Crop science/feedstock companies/plantation – all of this on a platform that makes networking as close to in-person interaction as it can feasibly be.

This 2-hour online networking event will comprise of a presentation by Christian Pinon, Independent Consultant from Triact, followed by face-to-face Q&A and free networking time.

N.B. This will not be a ‘webinar’ with hidden attendees, the set up will be designed to allow all to participate in the discussions and meet as many other attendees as possible.

Adventures in Technical Analysis

Eddie started from school in the City of London as a Warrants Clerk for LME Metals traders Transworld Metals in 1980. Realising the potential the City had in the 1980s for growth of the financial services sector and recognising his natural savvy as a market trader in his youth in Petticoat Lane in London could be advantageous, he developed his career through Bullion trading at Mocatta & Goldsmid; then Energy, Agricultural, Softs, Metals Futures and Options at Gerald Commodities, FX at Dean Witter plus FX, Futures, Equity and Fixed Income at Capcom. By 1990 he’d traded or brokered all of these & had enough expertise to have managed desks in all plus a temporary secondment to Chicago setting up there London based clients.

In 1991 he joined Esprit Brokers Limited (precursor to ADMISI, part of Archer Daniels Midland Company) to develop FX and LME business and started what is now the 24 Hour FX Desk of ADMISI. In 2018, after 26 successful years as Head of FX he moved to start a new role at ADMISI as Head of Technical Analysis and Senior Markets Analyst at ADMISI. Back in 1984, he was originally introduced by colleagues & friends to Technical Analysis & has been an avid practitioner ever since. Eddie has most recently (December 2021) been honoured to be elected Chairman of The Society of Technical Analysts in the UK. He is also a Member of ACI-UK (the FX dealers association) & an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment.

At ADMISI, Eddie produces and publishes ‘Eddie’s Crayons…’ videos on YouTube of Daily, Weekly and Annual Technical Analysis reviews of FX and selected commodity futures markets. Additionally, he’s spoken at many international conferences and seminars and was until recently visiting lecturer at the University of Essex, teaching the FX section on the short Masters level course – Financial Trading Analysis (‘FTA’).

Waste to Energy Markets: Opportunities, Challenges & How to Manage the Risks on Sourcing & Trading of Waste-Based Feedstocks

Bio-Oils is an independent business group created in 2005 to develop projects in the biofuels area, born with the strategic objective of becoming a relevant agent within the Spanish and European biodiesel market.

After 4 years working as Managing Director of BionetEuropa, one of the Spanish main players on UCOME industry, Javier started the operation in Spain for Petrotec on March 2012. One year later, Petrotec Spain reached a market share of 35% of the total UCOME (Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester) production. Javier was responsible for all the Spanish activities and targeted new sourcing markets in Latin America.

March Edition Sponsored by

Thursday, 25th of March 2021, 3pm-5pm CET

Speakers:

  1. Dickon Posnett, Director of Corporate Affairs, Argent Energy
  2. Jan De Kock, Key Account Manager, Desmet Ballestra

Presentation Content:

2. Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils (HVO) also referred to as Hydro processed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) are alternative renewable fuels to biodiesel. They are straight chain paraffinic hydrocarbons, free of oxygen and with a high cetane number. These fuels are produced via hydrotreatment of a wide variety of feedstock such as vegetable oils, used cooking oils (UCO), animal fats and fatty acids. The apparent versatility of feedstock origin and quality is evidently an advantage but at the same time, it introduces some challenges in the pretreatment process prior to hydrotreatment. Pretreated feedstock needs to meet very strict specifications, not exceeding a few parts per million, for phosphorus, total metals, chlorine and other contaminants. Reaching these strict specs is particularly difficult for lower quality feedstock such as certain animal fats and side streams such as acid oils, distillates and distillation pitches. In this presentation, a number of effective pretreatment processes for various HVO/HEFA feedstock will be discussed.

Thursday 24th June 2021, 3pm-5pm CET (2pm – 4pm GMT)

Join up to 500 targeted delegates online for two hours – including Biodiesel producers, HVO/HEFA producers, Downstream oil companies/HVO producers Researchers, Process technology providers, Catalyst companies, Fuel Traders/Brokers, Consultants, Crop science/feedstock companies/plantation – all of this on a platform that makes networking as close to in-person interaction as it can feasibly be.

This 2-hour online networking event will comprise of a presentation by Eerika Vuorio, Product Researcher at Neste, followed by face-to-face Q&A and free networking time.

The title of Eerikas presentation: Vehicle CO2 regulation in the EU does not recognize benefits of renewable and advanced fuels – How could this be fixed

CO2 regulation of vehicles measures actual CO2 content from a tailpipe during a test run and does not recognize if the CO2 originates from fossil or renewable fuel. On the other hand the CO2 emissions of electric cars are zero regardless how the electricity is produced. Therefore the vehicle regulation recognizes only “tank-to-wheels” emissions, while fuel directives RED II and FQD already recognize “well-to-wheels” approach and use a principle that CO2 emission of renewable fuel’s final combustion is zero.

The first emission reduction in passenger car regulation (130 gCO2/km) was achievable with optimization of existing driveline, aerodynamics and other areas. From 2020 forward the limit has been 95 gCO2/km, from 2025 forward 81 gCO2/km and from 2030 forward 59 gCO2/km. These reductions force electrification as the only solution since renewable fuels are not accepted as tools for reducing cars’ CO2 emissions. This emission reduction is a difficult task also for vehicle manufacturers (OEMs), since they are facing significant penalties if the fleet target cannot be reached.

As one solution to enable renewable fuels as an emission reduction tool also for the vehicle industry, Neste has proposed a crediting system. The system would allow car manufacturers to finance additional renewable fuel production and utilize the achieved emission reduction in their fleet targets. The system would prevent double counting and provide a stronger value chain enabling even greater CO2 emission reduction.
