Exclusive Site EDF’s Gavet hydro schemes – Tuesday 13th September 2016

During the afternoon of 13th September 2016 a limited number of conference attendees will receive a unique opportunity to visit EDF’s Gavet hydro schemes at Romanche river .

There is no extra charge to attend the site visit, but spaces are limited and allocated on a first come first served basis. Please register your attendance for the site visit when booking for the conference.

The mid-section of the Romanche river is presently equipped with 6 plants (82 MW, 320 GWh/y), that are at the end of their lifetime. EDF has therefore decided to fully redesign the river equipment, by substituting a unique plant to the six existing ones. Such a choice enables to maximize the output (about 40% higher) and drastically reduce the O&M cost, leading to a much better economy than the refurbishment option. However, such a choice also allows answering current concerns of our society in key areas: environment, public safety and integration in the territory. With respect to the environment, the new scheme will enable to answer the Water Framework Directive’s expectations on ecological continuity, by removing most of existing weirs and equipping the new dam with a fish pass as well as of a downstream migration device. From a safety perspective, energy dissipaters will be installed at the powerhouse, allowing again the practice of whitewater activities, with their associated economical benefits for the local community. In the field of territorial integration, dismantling the existing plants is the real stake. Besides in-depth studies to anticipate and master the effects of the weirs’ removal, EDF held a thorough dialogue to bring to the foreground a project for the territory, so as to define the future of the existing sites. Largest ongoing French hydropower project, Romanche Gavet illustrates the present vision of a hydropower scheme: efficient, environment friendly and respectful of public safety, realized in dialogue with and to the benefit of all stakeholders.

Ingens Hydropower Ltd. (Ingens Wasserkraft GmbH) owns the rights to a pumped storage power plant (PSPP) in Austria with the arguably best preconditions in Central Europe to realize an environmentally compatible and cost-efficient project. The PSPP at the site “Jauksattel” in southern Austria combines an extremely high feasibility with very low construction costs. The PSPP Jauksattel offers a unique combination of strengths:
• Only one landowner in the project area, who has signed a comprehensive project agreement, also owns the adjoining land and is part of the project team
• 380kV transmission line in sight of the area, which can be reached without additional power poles
• Very favorable topography
• Well-surveyed geology owing to a railway tunnel running beneath the area
• No impounding of natural water bodies
• In-depth preliminary analysis shows excellent environmental preconditions
• Existing roads to access the project area
• Plant designed to match the conditions of the future electricity markets

Ingens has made great progress in developing the project: written agreement with the landowner (incl. guarantee for the site and compensation of rights), environmental and geological evaluations, complete profitability assessment and sensitivity analysis as well as complete quotations from leading suppliers in their field. Ingens is now about to tackle the process of official authorization for the PSPP Jauksattel.

2004-07-01-Conjet

Conjet AB was formed in 1990 through a management buy-out from Atlas Copco AB where the development of hydrodemolition equipment started in 1983. The first Conjet hydrodemolition equipment was delivered in 1984. The long tradition and experience gained in the company since then has made Conjet AB the leading supplier of hydrodemolition equipment in the world.

Sweden is a small market for hydrodemolition equipment and during the Atlas Copco AB period most of the units were exported. Conjet still exports more than 90% of its turnover to numerous countries, including Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. Conjet has local representatives in several countries.

What is hydrodemolition?

Hydrodemolition is the only way to remove surface concrete from sensitive structures, such as bridges, pillars, dams, spillways, turbines, penstocks, parking decks, quays, canals, airports etc, without causing additional damage to the concrete left behind.

A high velocity water jet only removes weak and damaged concrete to a preset quality depth above or below the reinforcement bars, which if exposed is also cleaned of rust. The remaining healthy concrete is left in place with a rough and uneven textured surface, which is ideal for bonding the new surface material.

BHA (Brithish Hydropower Association)

The British Hydropower Association [BHA] is the only organisation that solely represents the UK Hydropower sector. BHA [www.british-hydro.org] members range from all-scale hydro developers and generators, investors, consulting engineers to manufacturers and suppliers of equipment. The BHA works mainly in the UK and overseas supporting and promoting the entire hydropower industry.

Hydropower is a well-established and proven technology. The first water turbines were built in the mid 1800’s and they have been developing ever since. Turbine efficiencies are rarely below 80% which is about double that of a steam turbine. Constant and continuing design improvements have brought efficiencies of over 90%!

Research and development continues into providing new and more cost-effective solutions and improvements to the design and engineering of new schemes.
Most of the hydropower in the UK has been developed, but resource studies have indicated that as much again of undeveloped potential is viable.

At present 30% to 40% of the UK’s renewable generation is provided by hydropower.

Globally, 17% of energy is supplied – and will continue to be supplied – from hydropower sources. The UK has been involved with the export of equipment and services for about 150 years – we still have the expertise and it is still involved in business worldwide.

IHA

The International Hydropower Association was created under the auspices of UNESCO in 1995. During two decades as the voice of sustainable hydropower, we have been part of a remarkable journey for the sector: the world’s installed hydropower capacity has grown from 625 GW to over 1,000GW, catalysing growth and development, and improving people’s lives around the world.
