Shell is an international energy company that aims to meet the world’s growing need for more and cleaner energy solutions in ways that are economically, environmentally and socially responsible. Our operations are divided into Upstream, Integrated Gas and New Energies, Downstream including Petrochemicals, and Projects & Technology

Our strategy is to strengthen our position as a leading energy company by providing oil, gas and low-carbon energy as the world’s energy system transforms. Safety and social responsibility are fundamental to our business approach.

Our strategy is founded on our outlook for the energy sector and the chance to grasp the opportunities arising from the substantial changes in the world around us. Shell will only succeed by working collaboratively with customers, governments, business partners, investors and other stakeholders. The rising standard of living of a growing global population is likely to continue to drive demand for energy, including oil and gas, for years to come. At the same time, technology changes and the need to tackle climate change means there is a transition under way to a lower-carbon, multi-source energy system with increasing customer choice.

Our headquarters are in The Hague, the Netherlands. The parent company of the Shell group is Royal Dutch Shell plc, which is incorporated in England and Wales.

As one of the world’s most innovative companies, Sunfire today develops and manufactures systems for renewable industrial gas and fuel production. These substitutes for mineral oil and natural gas, known as e-Gas, e-Fuel or e-Chemicals, replace fossil fuels in existing infrastructures. The solid oxide cells (SOCs) used for the conversion process are also used as generators to provide electricity and heat.

Sunfire’s vision is to make regenerative energy from sources such as wind farms, hydropower plants and photovoltaic systems available wherever and whenever it is needed — not just when the wind is blowing, the waves are crashing or the sun is shining.

The key component is the steam electrolyser, based on solid oxide cell technology and able to break water into its constituent parts not only from its liquid but also from its gaseous form (i.e. steam). The main benefit of steam electrolysis is that the enthalpy of vaporisation can be achieved without the use of expensive electrical energy. Indeed, recycling waste heat such as that generated by industrial processes makes it possible to increase the efficiency of the steam electrolyser to over 80 percent.

Sunfire is supported by strong partners such as Audi, Boeing or ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. It is the company’s goal to refine the solid oxide electrolyser and fuel cell systems and to advance their industrialisation. Only then can Sunfire’s technologies be established as the cornerstones of a decentralised energy system of the future.
