First-Mover Projects to a Connected European CO₂ Transport Market
ACI’s European CO₂ Shipping Summit 2027 will take place on 3–4 February 2027 in Antwerp, Belgium. As Europe moves from pioneering carbon capture and storage projects towards wider commercial deployment, the event will examine the financial, regulatory and technical foundations needed to build a scalable cross-border CO₂ transport network. It will bring together organisations responsible for capture, shipping, port and terminal infrastructure, storage, regulation, finance and engineering to discuss how the individual parts of the value chain can be developed as a coordinated system.
The 2027 programme focuses on the conditions required to move CO₂ shipping beyond a limited number of first-mover projects. Sessions will explore how bankable revenue models can be established across the integrated CCS chain, how the sector can progress from subsidy-supported development towards greater private investment, and how carbon pricing mechanisms compare with the full commercial requirements of capture, transport and permanent storage. The agenda will also consider how corporate capital-allocation cycles and project-development timelines can be better aligned to reduce delays in final investment decisions.
Cross-border policy and infrastructure integration form another central part of the discussion. Participants will examine the need for predictable European frameworks governing CO₂ transport, storage and commercial operations, including the implications of Article 6 for regional markets. The programme will consider how ships, ports and pipelines can operate as a flexible network; where repurposed assets may improve economics and deployment speed; and how dispersed and mid-scale emitters can gain access beyond established industrial clusters.
Technical and delivery risks will be addressed throughout the two days. Discussions will cover adaptive CO₂ quality frameworks, impurity management, conditioning requirements and the engineering consensus needed to support reliable interfaces across capture, transport and storage. The agenda will also examine vessel availability, shipbuilding lead times, procurement of specialised transport assets and the relationship between delayed project approvals and fleet development. Lessons from first-mover initiatives will be used to identify practical improvements for future project execution.
The European CO₂ Shipping Summit 2027 will also assess the sector’s place within Europe’s wider energy transition and emerging demand landscape. Topics include carbon utilisation, sustainable aviation fuels, the competitiveness of CCS against alternative decarbonisation routes and the balance between climate commitments, industrial competitiveness and energy security. The Inaugural European CO₂ Shipping Summit
The inaugural European CO₂ Shipping Summit brought together stakeholders from across the emerging CO₂ transport chain at a formative point in Europe’s CCS development.
