European Base Oils and Lubricants Online Series

Date: 4th October 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Follow us for the latest updates:

We aim to provide an experience as close to be an in-person event as possible, whilst maximising the opportunity for gaining industry insights and networking with peers. When you network at a live event, you take in the room, decide who you would like to talk to and then approach them. If you are unable to meet and talk with the people you want, what is the point? Here, everyone has their microphone and camera on, replicating the face-to-face benefits of an in-person conference. Moreover, our recurring series format allows attendees to reconvene with each event and establish relationships over time.

Electric Mobility: A New Era for Thermal Fluids

Climate change is deeply impacting many businesses and such is the case for the lubricant industry. One major change is the electric mobility that will drastically reduce Internal Combustion Engines and their associated lubricants. New fluids have to be designed for Battery Electric Vehicles.

This talk will present the impact of this electric revolution on fluid design. This will be illustrated by the example of battery fluid where specific fluids have been developed to offer ultra-fast charging and safety increase to the end user. Experimental and numerical approaches will be presented, and the global performance of the battery thermal management using such fluids will be assessed (weight, power consumption, etc.)

Lastly other thermal fluids for BEV will be presented to demonstrate the new Thermal paradigm for electric mobility in the lubricant industry.

Speaker

Nicolas Champagne, Research Development Program Manager, TotalEnergies

Global Ecolabelling Network and Biodegradable Lubricants

In the beginning of presentation, the overview of a global ecolabelling network will be given. The global ecolabelling network is composed of 29 ecolabelling organisations throughout the world which represent nearly 60 countries and territories.

After this, the presentation will focus on ecolabels present in the European Union such as Ecolabel, Blue Angel and Nordic Swan. These are the most present ecolabels in the European Union.

A brief overview of these ecolabels will be given. A brief overview will include a short history, countries of the European Union in which these ecolabels are present, number of products for which these ecolabels were issued, etc.

A similar brief overview of ecolabels present in China, Russia and Israel will be given.

China as the biggest market has three different ecolabels: China Environmental Labelling, China Environmentally Friendly Certification and Green Mark Program. Brief overview of all three Chinese ecolabels will be given in the presentation as well as possibilities of entering the Chinese market with ecolabels issued outside of China.

Since the Russian market is also big, an overview of Russian ecolabel Vitality Leaf will be given.

Israeli green label represents the only member of the global ecolabelling network from the Middle East, so an overview of this green label will be given.

After covering ecolabels, the powerpoint will focus on biodegradable products (chainsaw oil, formworking agent and cleaning agenet) that were developed by NIS a.d.

At the end of the powerpoint a few slides will be given about the company NOVVI since it is the only company in the world which process plant oils to produce base oils and lubricants.

Evolution of Lubricants for Electrified Transmissions at Scania | E-Motor Failure Case Study

Scania has a strong commitment to reduce the CO2 emissions from the trucks and buses that we produce as well as from our own operations. By 2025, Scania expects that electrified vehicles will account for around 10 percent or our total vehicle sales volumes in Europe and by 2030, 50 percent of our total vehicle sales volumes are expected to be electrified. To do this we offer vehicles that can are fully (BEV) or partly (PHEV) powered by electricity.

Our first electrified hybrid drivetrain was introduced in 2015 and in the following years we have learnt a lot on how to increase the durability especially with regards to corrosion of the electric motor.

This presentation will share some of the findings we have made. And some new methods we are using for screening corrosion properties of transmission oil on copper in the electric motor.

Shaping the Future | Change is Happening

As many of us are aware, the transportation industry is at an important crossroads: globalization, electrification, technology development, ongoing regulatory changes and growth in emerging markets are set to change the face of the industry in the next decade. All of us as industry stakeholders are faced with an interesting and challenging dynamic as demand in mature markets is reducing whilst the emerging markets continue to show further growth.

These are likely to be significantly impacted by rapidly changing events across the entire value chain – from evolving consumer preferences in cars, and the needs of fleet operators or managers, to the operation of broader distribution channels with expanding supply chains. To remain as market leaders, companies across the complete vehicle value chain need to assess how well they are prepared to respond to the evolving industry trends. This will allow manufacturers to capitalize on the opportunities that lie ahead. We will be required to ask ourselves how and where these demands will evolve, as well as how our products, business models and ways of engaging need to be adapted to these changes, both in the market general and OEM arenas.

For this online interactive session, we will share some thoughts and insights around the changing hardware architecture that impact lubricant technology design. This will focus on the passenger car and commercial vehicle markets, along with the e-Mobility area and how this has challenged conventional thinking around testing and is leading to new methodologies in the evaluation of products for the future.
