Capacitor Sciences: Solving Energy Storage from First Principles

Capacitor Sciences is developing the composite molecular dielectric materials technology to create low-cost, high energy density, high power density energy storage devices. The Company’s technology addresses the first principles for the ideal energy storage device:

  1. Benign, low cost materials with high specific energies to create energy storage capacitors
  2. Dielectric capacitive materials with unlimited charge/discharge cycles
  3. Maintains its full energy storage capacity (no degradation of performance) over its lifetime
  4. Allows for rapid and safe recharging
  5. Resulting energy storage capacitor is non-explosive and non-flammable
  6. Scalable for electric vehicle, residential, commercial, industrial and utility applications
  7. Capacitor cells are able to store energy at a cost significantly less than grid energy prices

The Proposition: Safe and High Energy Density Energy Storage With Rapid Recharge

Capacitor Sciences’ nano-molecular dielectric material technology will enable energy storage devices with energy and power densities that surpass those of lithium ion batteries. These energy storage devices can also be safely and rapidly charged and discharged. These capacitive energy storage modules can be deployed in electric vehicle, residential, commercial, industrial and utility energy storage markets.

Levisys: your partner in the transition to a renewable future

Levisys is a French manufacturer of highly efficient flywheels. The company offers flywheel & Hybrid storage systems, flywheels + batteries, for stationary energy storage applications.

Levisys uses passive magnetic sustentation to levitate a carbon fiber rotor, developed in collaboration with Airbus Industrie.

Levisys flywheels offer superior performance with exceptional efficiency and reliability, at a competitive cost:

  • High efficiency 97% over entire lifecycle
  • Life time > 500,000 cycles without degradation
  • No auxiliary cooling system
  • Low carbon footprint
  • Wide operating temperature range
  • TCO: 0.03 € / kWh / cycle

Using a levelized cost of storage (LCOS) as cost model, Levisys shows that flywheels should play a small but critical role in the transition to a renewable future.

In October 2016, a cooperation agreement was signed between Levisys and BYD. This enables Levisys to deliver performance-enhanced storage systems combining the high frequency and high sustainability properties of flywheels with the mass storage characteristics of lithium batteries.

At Levisys, we believe that technologies are complementary instead of competitive. Such hybrid systems are innovative solutions to:

  • Leverage value from energy storage
  • Benefits stacking, representing optimal solutions for grid operators

Levisys is involved in a large scale smart grid demonstrator in Toulouse (SW of France) by supplying 10 high performances flywheels and has inaugurated its new industrial production unit in TROYES (Champagne – France) with a 100 flywheels per year capacity.
