Lepidext’s vision is to sustainably control the most important lepidopteran insect pests by improving the way key lepidopteran pests are controlled.
Nudivirus technology:
Lepidext is currently targeting the corn earworm (CEW) and old world cotton bollworm (OWB). The CEW caterpillar is among the most devastating insect pests, because it feeds on and damages over 45 significant crops and costs U.S. farmers over $2 billion annually. The OWB, which has recently invaded the Western hemisphere, attacks 180 cultivated crops and causes $5 billion in damage worldwide. Thus, there is an urgent need for new ways to control both of these insect pests.
In 2017, Lepidext received a U.S. patent for their nudivirus technology. Lepidext’s HzNV-2 strains are sexually transmitted viruses that sterilize over 98% of infected insects and are able to reduce corn earworm populations. This virus is insect-specific and unstable outside the corn earworm. Furthermore, the strain is not a GMO and has an excellent safety profile. Because the caterpillars spread the virus, the nudivirus is one of the few organic pesticides not applied to the crop.
