Microgrids are getting a lot of attention, not just to support national security, but also to provide more resilient power supply at other types of facilities, and to allow for increased penetration of renewables. Agricultural complexes, academic campuses, health care centers, military bases, and even corporate grounds are exploring microgrid options to secure continuous reliability and quality of power supply. This has spurred creation of new technologies and control mechanisms that allow these systems to operate in a grid-connected mode and also independently for extended periods of time. They also support the modernization of older infrastructures and the containment of costs.
This conference series has been very informative and popular, following the success of last year’s conferences in Sonoma, California and Boston, Massachusetts. This is the second year that ACI is producing two Microgrid conferences, with our other conference for 2018 taking place in Charlotte, North Carolina.

247Solar is commercializing a modular, coal-competitive concentrated solar power (CSP) system called 247Solar Plant™ based on two MIT-invented clean energy technologies: an ultra-efficient industrial heat exchanger and an ultra-efficient microturbine. The system is designed to operate 24/7, regardless of weather, at power costs competitive with fossil fuel electricity generation. 247Solar is one of four MIT-related spin-offs launched by Ignite Technology Ventures, an incubator Bruce founded in 2000 to commercialize MIT technologies. Bruce ran for governor of the state of New Hampshire in 1986. In 1990, with US Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day in 1970, he co-founded Earth Day USA to transition the event from a domestic 10-year anniversary celebration to an international annual event. He has served as director of numerous national organizations and companies and was president of the MIT Alumni Club of Boston as well as a Director on the International Board of MIT’s Alumni Association. He was founding co-chair of the New England Clean Energy Council in 2008 and was the 2011 recipient of its Clean Energy Leadership Award. He currently serves as President of the MIT Crew Alumni Association and is a member of the MIT Corporation (board of trustees).
