The IMO Ballast Water Convention is on the eve of ratification. With only 2.14% of the required 35% Global Tonnage remaining to be signed, senior industry officials are suggesting that the convention is highly likely to be ratified in 2015. Once ratified, shipowners will be required to implement BWT Systems on certain vessels, within 1 year of ratification. The cost, installation and operation of BWT Systems, alongside the uncertainty of USCG Type Approval and IMO Regulations, are causing major problems for both the BWT System Manufacturers and shipowner/operators.
ACI’s 13th Ballast Water Management Summit will provide essential, expert guidance to shipowner/operators on how to prepare for and manage the BWT Systems in terms of installation and technical operations, as well as advice on compliance, PSC and regulation once the convention is in place.
Markus Helavuori, IMO Marine Environment Division
Christian Suhr, Managing Director, Ahrenkiel Shipmanagement
Peter Lundahl Rasmussen, Senior Marine Technical Officer, BIMCO
Emilio Tombolesi, Director, Environmental Policy, Carnival Corporation
Greg Hughes, MSD Projects Director, V.Ships
Doug Schneider, Vice President, World Shipping Council
Matthias Voigt, Director, Cathelco
Henrik Bacher, VP Consulting & Engineering, Elomatic
1) Interactive Practical: In groups, run through of BWM strategies to implement if the convention was ratified tomorrow.
2) Real industry challenges. More interactive panels & discussions, fewer commercial sales pitches.
3) Perfect balance of Operational/Technical and Regulatory perspectives.
4) Fantastic, intimate networking opportunities between senior level, key industry experts.
ACI’s meetings are strictly end-user focussed. The programme is co-ordinated with the Ballast Water Experts and Ship Owners in mind.
Delegates will include Senior Level Decision makers drawn from the Ship Owners, Ship Managers, Ballast Water Management System Manufacturers, Classification Societies, Ballast Water Regulators, Port State Control Authorities, Testing Facilities and others.
Hyde Marine, Inc. is a world leader in UV ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) designed to prevent the spread of non-indigenous aquatic organisms. The company has more than 30 years experience in diverse water treatment solutions and UV technology.
Through its Hyde GUARDIAN® BWTS, Hyde Marine was one of the first suppliers of a safe, chemical free UV disinfection solution to receive IMO Type Approval in 2009. Hyde Marine was one of the first to receive Alternative Management System (AMS) approval from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). Additionally, the company installed one of the first BWTS aboard a ship (M/S Coral Princess), which subsequently was the first BWTS in the USCG’s Shipboard Technology Evaluation Program (STEP).
Launched in 2014, the Hyde GUARDIAN Gold™ BWTS has the smallest footprint in the market, an optimized operator interface and is updated to meet current regulatory requirements. The Hyde GUARDIAN Gold BWTS allows for reduced ballast time, continuous and increased flow to ballast tanks and reduction in peak power requirements.
Hyde Marine now leads the ballast water treatment market with over 50 retrofit units installed. With more than 400 systems sold, the Hyde GUARDIAN BWTS is suitable for a broad range of treatment requirements and can be installed in new builds or retrofitted in-situ to existing vessels with no downtime. Hyde Marine continues to build global relationships with reliable and proven authorized engineering and installation partners. Its strong presence, reputation, and experience in the BWTS market is proof of Hyde Marine’s combined expertise and commitment to excellence.

De Nora, a private multinational company with global headquarters in Italy, provides its customers with safe, innovative and sustainable energy saving technologies on worldwide basis.
De Nora Water Technologies represents more than 50 years’ experience of water treatment applications through brands such as Capital Controls®, TETRA®, ClorTec® and BALPURE®, combined with the product development and electrolytic disinfection expertise of a true global leader. The company’s products, systems and technologies, boosted by continuous investments in R&D, are used across multiple industries and applications including the municipal water and wastewater, oil and gas, power generation and marine sectors.
The Type-Approved and patented BALPURE ballast water treatment system is a simple, reliable and flexible electrolytic disinfection treatment solution to meet the most stringent ballast water discharge requirements. Using a slip stream approach, the BALPURE system can be remotely mounted away from the ballast lines and split into small sub‑assemblies to minimize other equipment relocation and additional engineering/ship re-designs
DHI’s test facilities in Denmark and Singapore offer high flexibility and short time from contract to initiation of type approval testing of ballast water management systems in accordance with the U.S. Coast Guard regulation and the IMO G8 guidelines. The two test facilities provide excellent opportunities to perform type approval tests in the time zone or climate preferred by the manufacturer.
DHI can provide relevant challenge conditions in the land-based test as required to ensure robust testing of the specific treatment technology. For example, the relevant challenge is different for systems using either ultraviolet (UV) radiation or electro-chlorination.
DHI can prepare test waters that present a realistic challenge of the BWMS. This is essential to attain a proven technology which will be considered reliable by the shipping industry.
Finding a suitable vessel for shipboard test can be difficult and time-consuming. DHI offers the BWMS manufacturer an early dialogue to discuss the logistics and the requirements for the type approval test on board. Our large and experienced ballast water team enables us to initiate shipboard tests with short notice.
Trojan Marinex is focused solely on the marine industry and providing ballast water treatment (BWT). Having direct access to nearly 40 years of industry-defining water treatment expertise, in combination with steadfast backing (we are part of the Trojan Technologies group of businesses), has enabled us to create a suite of BWT systems unlike any other. Trojan Marinex BWT systems are purpose-built for the marine environment, and provide filtration + UV in a single, compact unit. Our product suite includes a full range of systems that are able to treat any flow rate throughout all water qualities.
Trojan Marinex BWT system testing was conducted under the supervision of DNV – a certified Independent Lab (IL) by the United States Coast Guard (USCG). Testing was conducted in accordance with United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Ballast Water Protocol. The ETV protocol is a key testing requirement for systems to obtain USCG Type Approval. The system is tested and approved to one of the lowest UV transmittance values in the industry, under full flow conditions, and in all three salinity ranges – fresh water, brackish water, and marine water. The entire product suite has achieved IMO Type Approval and USCG AMS Acceptance. In March 2015, a formal application for USCG Type Approval was submitted – this was the first application in the industry.
Biomarine S.r.l. is a manufacturer focused in the design and construction of ozone systems for big ships’ ballast water treatment. World leader for applications on field, the company vants a 25 year know-how experience. The on line ballast water treatments and the high quality of the technology components ensure a long lasting high performance and safety of Biomarine plants. This reliability is also guaranteed by the obtainment of the certifications in progress related to the new amendments i.e. “IMO” (International Maritime Organization), “USCG” (United States Coast Guard) and “RINA” (Registro Italiano Navale) TYPE APPROVAL, that are needed for the acceptance and validation of naval products.
