DHI Ballast Water Centre – Tuesday 15th September 2015

Ballast water test facility in Singapore mimics real ballast tanks found on ships in order to minimise the potential gap between land-based and shipboard testing. It is the first of its kind in a tropical climate, with the capacity to conduct tests throughout the year under highly challenging conditions. Our facility consists of a 550 m3 source tank and two retention tanks, each with a volume of 250 m3.  We can provide flow rates from 200 – 500 m3/h. The environmental laboratory is accredited per ISO 17025 standards.

The DHI Ballast Water Centre in Singapore is recognised by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) as an Independent Laboratory subcontracted to DNV GL. With the recognition, we can independently evaluate the performance of ballast water management systems (BWMS) for type approval, in compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) and USCG standards.

Chelsea Technologies Group has over 50 years’ experience in the design and manufacture of a range of sensors and systems for the marine, environmental, defence, homeland security, industrial process control and life science markets. Using our experience developing tools for monitoring in the marine environment, and our knowledge of phytoplankton photosynthesis, we have developed FastBallast, a sensor for monitoring the compliance of discharged ballast water against the IMO D2 and USCG discharge standards (10-50µm range). The monitor is based on our established Fast Repetition Rate technology which we have sold to the marine science community for over 20 years. FastBallast is configured both as a portable system and as an online process control monitor for integration within Ballast Water Treatment Systems. FastBallast can measure phytoplankton at very low concentrations and so is able to derive compliance levels at the IMO D2 and USCG discharge standards (10-50µm range).

Trojan Marinex is focused solely on the marine industry and providing ballast water treatment (BWT). Having direct access to nearly 40 years of industry-defining water treatment expertise, in combination with steadfast backing (we are part of the Trojan Technologies group of businesses), has enabled us to create a suite of BWT systems unlike any other. Trojan Marinex BWT systems are purpose-built for the marine environment, and provide filtration + UV in a single, compact unit. Our product suite includes a full range of systems that are able to treat any flow rate throughout all water qualities.

Trojan Marinex BWT system testing was conducted under the supervision of DNV – a certified Independent Lab (IL) by the United States Coast Guard (USCG). Testing was conducted in accordance with United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Ballast Water Protocol. The ETV protocol is a key testing requirement for systems to obtain USCG Type Approval. The system is tested and approved to one of the lowest UV transmittance values in the industry, under full flow conditions, and in all three salinity ranges – fresh water, brackish water, and marine water. The entire product suite has achieved IMO Type Approval and USCG AMS Acceptance. In March 2015, a formal application for USCG Type Approval was submitted – this was the first application in the industry.
