Dong Energy’s Skærbæk Power Station Starts Firing on Biomass

Utility DONG Energy’s conversion of its Skærbæk plant to process biomass is nearing completion after one of its two new furnaces successfully burnt woodchips.

According to a statement from consultancy Sweco, the Fredericia-based plant processed its first biomass on 7 May.

The so-called “first fire” process was carried out in one of the new furnaces supplied by Denmark-based Babcock & Wilcox Volund.

Sweco’s project manager at Skærbæk, René Salomon, said: “Lighting the first furnace is a result of the enormous effort by employees from DONG, Sweco and other advisers and the many contractors involved in the project. It’s a great job.”

Salomon explained that firing up the system would now allow it to see any potential faults. “Therefore, the summer can also be used to debug and refine and optimise the plant before it is put into final test operation in the autumn,” he said.

The facility, which originally fired on natural gas, has been scheduled to carry out the first fire during April but the development had experienced delays.

The conversion work started in August 2014 and is planned to be completed in October.

When operational the plant will process 450,000 tonnes of woodchips a year, or 110 tonnes per hour, and have capacities of 320MW of heat and 95MW of electricity. [article by Luke Walsh, ENDS Waste&Bioenergy (EWB), 17/05]

ACI’s will be hosting 7th Annual European Biomass to Power Conference on 8th & 9th November 2017 in Aarhus, Denmark. In addition to the main two day event, during the afternoon of Tuesday 7th November 2017 a limited number of conference delegates will receive a unique opportunity to visit Dong Energy’s Skaerbaek Power Station, a well as join tours to Dong Energy’s Studstrup Power Station, Biomass fired CHP plant in Lisbjerg and Verdo’s CHP Plant (KVR) in Randers. There is no extra charge to attend the site visits, but spaces are strictly limited and allocated to conference delegates on a first-come, first-served basis, so it is highly recommended to book early to guarantee availability.
